A message from Nikki's Mom.Ellen's letter to us all.Nikki is a great cook, a wonderful singer, an artist, an animal lover, a terrific and loyal friend to so many, a wife, a sister and my daughter. In 1997 Nikki was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The tumor was surgically removed April 3, 1998 leaving brain damage in its wake. Nikki has had to rely on Social Security income since 1997, when her disabilities became too severe for her to work in her field. Tragically, on January 3, 2010 another brain tumor was discovered. The biopsy results were devastating. The cancer was different this time, and the worst kind: a Glioblastoma Multiforme, Stage IV. The quarter-sized tumor was surgically removed, however it sends out tentacles in search of new, weak cells to attach onto where a new tumor will develop. It is very aggressive, and conventional treatments will have little effect on its progress. The Doctors tell us the cancer can only be kept at bay by taking chemotherapy, with radiation of the currently affected area. It cannot be killed by these treatments, however, only slowed. An MRI will need to be done every two months for the rest of Nikki’s life, as this cancer, once it takes hold again, can double in size every week. Radiation will likely cause more brain damage, but without it, the cancer will run wild. Nikki’s Social Security only pays 80% of most hospital and physician charges. Medicaid would pick up the difference, but she will only be eligible for Medicaid after spending $6,000.00, out of pocket, each six month period. Nikki and her husband Jesse live below the poverty level. For this reason her family and friends are reaching out to one and all for help. None of us can absorb the expense, which will be ongoing. Nikki’s life has changed dramatically over the last twelve years. Despite the struggle Nikki has had to endure in order to get through each day, she remains hopeful, optimistic and is definitely going to attack this disease with every fiber of her being!! Please go to Nikki’s website for updates on her fight!! Nikki cannot receive donations directly, so I have set up a Special Needs Trust in Nikki’s name. All funds donated through the trust will be used to pay for Nikki’s medical expenses. Nikki is a lovely and special woman. Won’t you please help?
